On the Go 2010 for Residences
May 10 to June 18, 2010 Objectives How the challenge works The "On the Go" challenge is an incentive for people living in retirement homes or frequenting seniors support centres to be physically active by recording their daily activity time. Participants are encouraged to be on the move for 60 minutes a day (the maximum that they can record on their summary sheets), be it at home, at their residence or with a group. To participate in the challenge, residences and seniors support centres are asked to provide an employee or volunteer to coordinate the activity for their residents or clients. The activity coordinator must organize participants into teams (maximum of 10 people per team) and are encouraged to create team names with them. They are then asked to collect all weekly participant summary sheets and transfer this information to the respective Team Logsheets. Participants are asked to record their daily physical activity minutes. Every minute of physical activity equals one kilometre (e.g. 20 minutes of activity = 20 kilometres). At the end of each week, participants must return their summary sheets to the activity coordinator, who will use the map to demonstrate how far the team has travelled during that time. The challenge ends on Friday, June 18 and activity coordinators are encouraged to finalize each participating team’s progress and to organize a recognition activity. To order participant certificates for the challenge, contact the Eastern Ontario Health Unit before the end of the challenge at 613-933-1375 or 1 800 267-7120 and ask for the Health Line.
