Dental Screening
The Eastern Ontario Health Unit is mandated by Ontario’s Mandatory Health Programs and Services and in accordance with the School Health Services and Regulations (O.Reg.570) to conduct a Dental Indices Survey (DIS) in elementary schools on a yearly basis. Public Health dental hygienists conduct the dental screenings with randomly selected students. Dates of screenings are always confirmed with the school in advance. School personnel who are aware of children who aren't in the selected grades for the screening, but who would benefit from the screening, can inform the hygienist at the time of her visit. School personnel should also inform the hygienist of children whose parents have declined to have their child screened. Parents who are unable to afford emergency dental care for their children may be eligible to receive provincial dental coverage. They can call the Eastern Ontario Health Unit to obtain more information at 613-933-1375 or 1 800 267-7120. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit also offers a brief presentation to teachers on oral health as it pertains to the curriculum. Arrangements for this presentation can be made when the dental hygienist calls to book a date for the next dental screenings.
